Upstate New York by Joseph Brennan

When one thinks of the dense and dark forests of a Grimm tale, each creaking bough the home of some mythical monster of Germanic villagers’ construction, one doesn’t immediately connect this imagery with the surrounds of upstate New York. And yet, despite any perfecting influence of residents like Martha Stewart, bringing with it properties with just the right amount of heavily contrived unruliness (and a dash of neoclassicism), behind all of this there exists sprawling woodland, wholly subservient to one’s imagination.

Here, great plains of browning lichen form speckled slopes to trees so old they have to kneel in order to stand.  It’s beautiful, and eerily so. I feel like I’m deep inside some fairytale landscape, bordered on every side by the reality of developed life.
