Full license in colour – Margaret Preston

I suppose Margaret Preston would have seen Pierre Bonnard’s work when she was in Europe.

These Preston still lives really remind me of his work.

A combination of naturalism and decorative flatness. And the two come together beautifully here in all their domesticity.

This table-cloth cuts right into the painting. Reinforcing the flatness of the picture frame.

The strong whites also hover between a flat decorative device and a rounded full object.

Like Preston – lots of contradictions.
